Night in Siem Reap.

Angkor Thom, meaning “Great City” in Khmer, was the last capital city of the Angkorian Empire. Your exploration begins at the South Gate, one of the four gates into the city, which lead to the Bayon. The former state temple best recognized by the hundreds of serenely smiling faces, each over 4 meters tall, sculpted onto some 50 remaining towers. You will walk through narrow maze-like hallways and corridors, stairs and towers to discover the bas-relief decorations that adorn the wall of the monument.

Moving north of Bayon, you will discover the Baphuon, a magnificent 11^th Hindu temple converted to the worship of Buddha in the 15^th century before entering the Royal Palace grounds. While the Palace itself can no longer be found, the remaining sites are marvels to behold. The Terrace of the Elephants is an impressive two and a half meter tall, 300 meter long terrace wall with carved elephant heads protruding out at several section, their trunks forming pillars.  Phimeanakas - impressive rite and sandstone pyramid. Terrace of the Leper King is at the north end of the Terrace of the Elephants, a double terrace wall with deeply carved nag as, demons and other mythological beings. Be sure to visit the mythical ruins of the Ta Prohm temple where human architectural genius has been overpowered, then complemented by nature over the centuries, as massive trees stand and cast shadows over equally stupendous towers while determinedly grasping them with their roots.

Just south of Angkor Thom lies the highlight of the UNESCO Heritage Site is Angkor Wat, the pride of Cambodia. The temple complex was built in the 12^th century under King Suryavarman II and epitomizes the accomplishment and splendor of Khmer architecture, culture and religion. The five towers that form the temple’s mountain are flanked by galleries with ornate carvings in rose and grey sandstone. As you enter the causeway to cross the moat surrounding the temple, you can begin the visual feast. Try not to miss sunset over Angkor Wat, best viewed from the steps of Pre Rup Temple!

Night in Siem Reap.

After breakfast, embark on an excursion by motor-powered sampan to Prek Toal to explore the biodiversity of Tonle Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. There we will explore a wild bird sanctuary, the flooded forest and floating villages. During the boat trip you will be able to observe different fishing methods on the river and see how local people live on and earn their livelihood from the river.

Picnic lunch and return to Siem Reap town.

Breakfast at hotel, transfer to the airport for a short flight to Phnom Penh, the capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by our tour guide and check-in to your hotel.

Phnom Penh literally means “Penh’s Hill.” Legend has it that a wealthy widow named Yeay Penh was walking by the Tonle River one day when she found a floating Koki Tree log with four bronze Buddha statues and a stone statue of the Hindu god Vishnu inside. On a nearby hill, she built a temple and a shrine to house the statues and established the Wat Phnom (Hill Temple) as a central place for religious worship and thus gave the city its popular name!

Visit Wat Phnom temple and stand on the grounds that destined Phnom Penh for greatness. Continue your excursion into the nearby Royal Palace. Built in 1866, the Royal Palace is a beautiful complex which includes the Throne Hall, the Silver Pagoda, and numerous halls and residences for the Royal family. The Silver Pagoda is the royal place of worship and is adorned with Buddha statues, most eminently the Crystal Buddha.

Night in Phnom Penh.

After breakfast, depart for Kep (3 hours by car). Free time for you to explore Kep.

Kep is a tiny, sleepy coastal province known for its crab dishes as well as its access to gorgeous tropical islands. The town has many crumbling villas from its former glory as a French colonial resort town.

Suggestion: Tour the old mansions, king palace, the famous Crab Market with a tuktuk ride or take a trip to Rabbit Island to laze on. The Kep Beach is also a good place to get some insight into local life in Kep.

Breakfast at hotel, transfer to Phnom Penh airport for your departure flight (3 hours by car).
